Most Ontario farmers choose barn colours for tradition or appearance. Red because it’s always been red. White because it’s clean. What fewer farmers know is that colour choice has a direct, measurable effect on how hot the inside of your building gets on a 32°C Wellington County afternoon — and what that costs you in animal stress, spoiled feed, and hydro bills.

Why Dark Roofs Turn Barns Into Heat Traps
When sunlight hits your barn roof, one of two things happens: the surface reflects it away, or it absorbs it and converts it to heat. A standard dark metal roof on a hot, sunny July day in Southwestern Ontario can reach over 60°C. That heat conducts straight through the steel and radiates down into your building — warming your animals, your feed, and your air long after the sun goes down.
Two numbers tell the story. Solar reflectance is how much of the sun’s energy a surface bounces away. Thermal emittance is how quickly a surface sheds the heat it does absorb. A standard dark metal roof scores low on both. A premium white agricultural coating scores high on both — meaning less heat gets in, and what does get in leaves faster.

What This Means for Livestock, Grain, and Your Hydro Bill
Livestock and dairy operations
Heat stress in dairy cattle directly reduces milk production and reproductive efficiency. In poultry and hog barns, high interior temperatures mean poor feed conversion and, in extreme cases, increased mortality. Dropping your interior temperature even 4°C–6°C through a reflective roof coating is a passive, maintenance-free contribution to animal welfare — every summer, for the next 15 years.
Grain and hay storage
Heat drives humidity. High temperatures inside a grain bin or hay storage barn create condensation cycles that promote mould, attract insects, and spoil what you worked all season to bring in. A cooler roof helps keep your storage drier without adding any mechanical systems.
Ventilation and energy costs
If your HVLS fans and ventilation systems run flat out from June to September, a significant part of that load is fighting heat conducted through your roof. Lower the base temperature of the building, and those systems run less often, last longer, and cost less to operate.
Can You Keep the Red and Still Manage Heat?
Yes — and this is worth knowing if you want the traditional look without the thermal penalty. Modern professional agricultural coatings use engineered inorganic pigments that look like traditional barn red to the human eye while reflecting a much higher proportion of near-infrared radiation than a standard red paint. You keep the heritage appearance; your barn runs cooler than it would with a budget-grade red.
This is one reason professional-grade paint systems are worth the difference in cost. The pigment technology isn’t available at the farm supply store.
The Summer Coating Approach That Makes It Work
Getting the thermal benefit from a high-reflectance coating requires proper preparation and application. The coating needs a clean, sound substrate to bond to — and the roof gets the highest priority, since it receives the most direct sun. A proper process looks like this:
- Substrate assessment to identify rust, old flaking paint, or surface contamination that would prevent adhesion
- Industrial pressure washing or sandblasting as required by surface condition
- Application of a primer system matched to the substrate (galvanized steel, bare metal, or pre-coated panels all have different requirements)
- Topcoat application of a UV-stabilized polyurethane or elastomeric reflective system rated for agricultural use
A good elastomeric topcoat also handles the thermal expansion problem: as your metal roof heats up and cools down through 30°C or more of daily temperature swing, the coating stretches and contracts with the metal instead of cracking. That’s what separates a 3-year paint job from a 15-year one.
The Bottom Line for Ontario Farm Owners
You don’t need to paint your barn white to get a thermal benefit — though white gives you the most. What matters is understanding that colour choice is a functional decision, not just an aesthetic one, and that premium coating systems give you options that a paint roller and a can from the co-op don’t.
